The Last of Us
One of the first big hits of 2023 was the long-awaited adaptation of The Last of Us game franchise . Launched in January, the HBO series was a huge public phenomenon at the beginning of the year, generating several discussions after the premiere of each weekly episode on the network, which soon ordered a second chapter for the series.
Starring Pedro Pascal ( Game of Thrones ) and Bella Ramsey ( Game of Thrones ), The Last of Us series , like the games, is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where a virus has decimated a large portion of civilization. There, we follow the journey of Joel and Ellie, two survivors who try at all costs to find a way to live in the midst of devastation.
The Last of Us conquered specialized critics and many fans of the game from the first moment, being considered one of the best video game adaptations of recent years and of the television industry in 2023.
Succession -Season 4
The award-winning Succession came to an end this May on HBO, garnering high acclaim from audiences and critics alike with extremely well-executed episodes. Created by Jesse Armstrong ( Peep Show ), the show that follows the dramas of a family of billionaires has maintained a niche popularity since its launch in 2018, but ended up gaining strong media appeal with the arrival of the fourth and final season, with its quality being compared to that of productions such as The Sopranos Family .
Succession tells the story of the Roys, a billionaire family that owns one of the most successful media conglomerates in the USA. With the patriarch Logan ( Brian Cox ) about to leave the chair of leadership, the businessman's children begin to compete with each other to see who will succeed their father in the corporation. The dilemma comes to a dramatic conclusion in the show's fourth season, which is filled with outstanding performances from the entire cast and has placed the series on the list of best productions of the year.
Treta
Treta was a great surprise from Netflix that undoubtedly remains one of the best series of 2023. Starring Steven Yeun ( The Walking Dead ) and Ali Wong ( Always Be My Maybe ), the streaming giant's acidic comedy was produced in partnership with A24 and conquered the public for its peculiar premise, in addition to excellent performances.
In the series, a car incident ends up awakening the fury of two strangers, a bankrupt contractor and a frustrated businesswoman. Unhappy, the duo begins to experience dark and angry impulses that take them on a mind-blowing and unusual journey.
In addition to dealing with psychological issues, Treta deals with issues such as family conflicts, the search for a purpose in life and professional problems. It's one of Netflix's biggest hits in recent years.
Barry - Season 4
Created by Bill Hader ( It: Chapter 2 ) and Alec Berg ( EuroTrip - Passport to Confusion ), the comedy (not so comedy) Barry came to an end in May this year with its fourth season. Walking through darker corners, the conclusion of the series was acclaimed by the public and the critics, presenting moments that are not at all comfortable and great reflections on the entertainment industry.
In Barry , we follow the journey of the titular character, played by Bill Hader, a war veteran who, in his spare time, works as a hitman. Until Barry is hired to kill an aspiring actor, but the mission ends up changing the course of his life: all he wants, then, is to be on top of the stage.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - Season 5
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is yet another series that ended its trajectory this year in style. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ( Gilmore Girls ), the show follows the journey of Miriam “Midge” Maisel ( Rachel Brosnahan ) in the 1950s. With an Upper West Side apartment, husband and children, Midge believes she has the perfect life, but her world is turned upside down after a shocking revelation. Aimlessly, the young woman ends up embarking on an unusual mission: to become a famous comedian.
With Amy Sherman-Palladino's acidic and agile style, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won Emmys and audience hearts with Rachel Brosnahan 's incredible performance . The fifth and final season of the series managed to deliver an excellent ending for the character, in addition to a great job by the entire team. It's that kind of series that, without a doubt, will leave a lot of nostalgia in the fans.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Another 2023 Netflix hit was Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story , the Bridgerton spinoff series . Created by Shonda Rhimes ( Grey's Anatomy ), the show has gone back in time to tell the story of Queen Charlotte ( India Amarteifio/Golda Rosheuvel ), her rise to power and her marriage to King George III ( Corey Mylchreest/James Fleet ).
With great performances from the cast, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has all the atmosphere of Bridgerton to delve even further into the universe created by writer Julia Quinn , using contemporary themes to expand debates such as mental health and prejudice.
The Other Two - Season 3
The comedy The Other Two may even have gone unnoticed by many people, but that does not exclude it from the best premieres of 2023. This year, the Comedy Central series that ended up on HBO Max , launched its third and final season of the program, which garnered strong critical acclaim for delivering excellence across the body of work, making even more absurd and comical satires of the entertainment industry.
In The Other Two , audiences follow the story of two siblings – an aspiring actor and a former professional dancer – as they try to find their place in the world, while dealing with their younger brother's sudden internet fame.
Dead Ringers
Starring Rachel Weisz ( Disobedience, Black Widow ), the Dead Ringers miniseries arrived in the Amazon Prime Video catalog in April and also deserves to be highlighted in the best of the year. The production is a modern version of David Cronenberg 's 1988 film of the same name, an adaptation of the novel Twins , published by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland in 1977.
Dead Ringers is a psychological thriller that tells the story of twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle ( Rachel Weisz ). Sharing absolutely everything in their lives, the duo goes beyond the limits of ethics to challenge practices that they consider outdated and, thus, put women's health first.
In addition to respecting the work on which it is inspired, the miniseries is a great psychological thriller that addresses interesting themes about the female universe with a high-level performance by Rachel Weisz.
Yellowjackets - Season 2
Unexplained Symbols, Unusual Revelations, and Cannibalism: Season 2 of Yellowjackets debuted on Paramount+ in late March with all that and more. The story of a plane crash that sent high school football players to a wild clan in the middle of nowhere returns for its second year with new mysteries and characters, delivering excellent performances and emotional moments.
With an impeccable soundtrack, Yellowjackets has been increasingly standing out among the public since its debut in 2021, winning strong acclaim from critics and fans for exploring interesting mysteries and having a great dynamic between the actresses that make up the cast.
