Glamour, fame and a lot of rivalry: welcome to the fantastic world of Hollywood. In the American film industry, not everything is as it seems, and it is enough that the cameras are turned off (or not, depending on the severity of the situation) for fights between celebrities to happen. Many of them are so incisive that even we, mere mortals, learn of the intrigues.
It was with this in mind that we selected 10 famous fights between Hollywood stars that caused a great commotion in the industry!
One of Hollywood's most famous brawls involves two industry giants: Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. It all started in mid-2016, when the filming of Fast and Furious 8 was taking place, when The Rock used social media to criticize members, without naming names, of the film's male cast. According to the star, some members were not professionals on set.
Johnson's testimony generated a lot of controversy because, at the time, some rumors pointed to a certain disagreement of the actor with Vin Diesel, who was supposedly delaying the production of the film. Soon, under such circumstances, many people began to theorize that The Rock's acidic comment had been directed at Diesel.
Even Fast and Furious stars jumped into the debate: Michelle Rodriguez even said the two did indeed have a feud, and actor Tyrese Gibson claimed it was The Rock who was causing trouble. But regardless of what motivated the conflict, it seems that things have calmed down between the two (in the public eye), as in 2019, Dwayne thanked Diesel for his support of the film Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw.
Still, The Rock doesn't seem the least bit excited about the idea of returning to the Fast and Furious universe, as he won't be in the tenth film in the franchise, which opens this May.
Joan Crawford vs. Bette Davis
Leaving the present day a bit to take a brief trip back in time, one of the most famous fights in Hollywood history was led by actresses Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, two important stars of the Golden Age of cinema. The conflict between the two was so iconic that it even inspired the first season of the series Feud, which recounts the intrigue that rocked the actresses' relationship.
The fight began there in 1935, when Bette Davis fell in love with actor Franchot Tone, who starred opposite her in the film Dangerous Woman. However, to Davis' misfortune, Tone ended up marrying Joan Crawford, who was newly divorced at the time, shortly after filming for the film ended.
Things got worse when the two starred in the classic What Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), a film in which the backstage was not pleasant at all. Just to get a sense of the intensity of the hatred, there's a certain scene in the movie where Davis' character hits Crawford's, and what happened there was that Davis actually hit her co-worker so hard that she needed stitches.
Will Smith vs. Chris Rock
There was only one event that made the 2022 Oscars go down in the history of Hollywood's most popular awards show: the slap Will Smith gave Chris Rock in the middle of the ceremony, live and in color. The incident marked a new controversy of the event, which had been quiet since the infamous exchange of envelopes in the 2017 edition.
It all started when Chris Rock took the stage to present the Best Documentary category at the Oscars. There, the comedian ended up making a joke about the shaved hair of Jada Pinkett-Smith, Will's wife, and the actor was extremely offended. Smith then got up and went on stage to slap Rock in the face. Shortly thereafter, Will won his first Oscar for the film King Richard: Creating Champions (2021).
It took a while for the audience to realize that the slap had been very real and not a mere representation. The scandal reverberated for months, and Smith was even banned from the ceremony for 10 years because of the lawsuit. The actor has spoken a few times on the subject, always showing regret for what happened. Rock, meanwhile, continues to use the case as a joke in his stand-up performances.
Sylvester Stallone vs. Richard Gere
Another famous fight between Hollywood stars is that of Sylvester Stallone with Richard Gere. The conflict occurred during the 1970s when both were cast in the film The Lords of Flatbush (1974). You know when you don't go too far with someone's face first? So that's exactly what happened to both of them.
At the time of the film's filming, franchise star Rocky Balboa didn't get along very well with Gere because he thought he was a bit of a mess. Stallone even commented on the intrigue in 2006 during an interview with Ain't It Cool, stating that the actor "paraded around in his oversized biker jacket as if he were the best rider on the round table."
But what was only speculative ended up getting worse: during a backstage lunch, the two began to physically fight over a spilled chicken fat. The result of all this? Richard Gere's role in the film had to be recast, causing him to be replaced by actor Perry King.
Sarah Jessica Parker vs. Kim Cattrall
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall played best friends in the iconic series Sex and the City, but real life is a long way from repeating the fiction in this case. The intrigue between the two had been speculated about since the time of the HBO show, though they never admitted anything about disagreements in that period.
However, that all changed when a report in The Daily Mail claimed that the third Sex and the City film would not happen because of Kim Cattrall's demands. According to the outlet, the actress would only sign the contract for the new film if Warner Bros. produced other projects of hers, which did not occur.
It was around this time that Kim Cattrall changed the tone of her statements regarding Sarah Jessica Parker. She even went so far as to say, during an interview with host Piers Morgan in 2017, that the two had a "toxic relationship" and that the colleague "could have been friendlier" with her decision not to take part in the third Sex and the City movie.
On the other hand, Sarah Jessica Parker claims she never fought with the actress after the 2017 revelation. Apparently, tempers were not calmed, as Cattrall was not invited to participate in the revival of the series, And Just Like That.
Debbie Reynolds vs. Elizabeth Taylor
Like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, actresses Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor were big names from Hollywood's Golden Age who also faced some disagreements throughout their lives. In their case, the long-standing friendship between the two went through troubled periods when Mike Todd, Taylor's husband, died in a plane crash in 1958.
What happened was that after Todd's tragic death, Elizabeth eventually became close to Eddie Fisher, Debbie's husband, and the two began to live an affair in secret. At the time, some rumors about the pair's alleged involvement made headlines, but Reynolds was the last to know what was going on.
The discovery only came when, one day, she called Elizabeth Taylor's hotel and Fisher was the one who answered the phone. About a month later, Fisher left Debbie to be with Elizabeth.
Although it took some time to deal with the situation, Reynolds and Taylor eventually resumed their friendship eventually and even starred in a movie together.
Hilary Duff vs. Lindsay Lohan
Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were two big darlings of the Hollywood spotlight in the early 2000s. While Hilary shone as Lizzie McGuire, Lindsay became one of the most influential celebrities of her generation with classics like Mean Girls, and since media exposure, mostly involving young women, back then was far more problematic than it is today, the intrigue between the two caused an intense commotion in the industry.
The pivot of the whole situation was actor and singer Aaron Carter, who starred opposite Duff in the series Lizzie McGuire in 2011. The two met during the recordings and soon engaged in a relationship that lasted almost two years. However, Carter eventually left the actress to stay with Lindsay Lohan, claiming he "was bored".
A short time later, Carter broke up with Lohan and went back out with Duff, which ended up starting a "silent" conflict between the two. What started with their appearances on red carpets for projects starring them became a bigger fight when Lindsay allegedly had Chad Michael Murray, the star who starred opposite Duff in The New Cinderella (2004), spread lies about Hilary.
Despite the intrigues of the time, the two stars of the 2000s eventually made amends, leaving differences and enmities in the past.
Tom Cruise vs. Rob Lowe
Before he became one of the world's best-known stars, Tom Cruise was also involved in a fight — and it wasn't just verbal. It all happened on the set of director Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film Aimless Lives while the star was rehearsing a fight scene with actor Rob Lowe. The problem is that Lowe accidentally actually hit Cruise, which caused the actor to smash into him hard. The two ended up hanging out on the slap until they were separated by the team.
According to Rob Lowe, it was the competitiveness among the young stars that motivated the intrigue. The actor commented on the feud in a few interviews, always stating that Cruise was so competitive at the time that he didn't even want to share a room with his co-workers.
Susan Sarandon vs. Debra Messing
Susan Sarandon and Debra Messing have also been freaking out in recent years. In their case, the intrigue began in 2016 because of differing opinions regarding the American political context at the time, on the eve of Donald Trump's election.
That year, Messing, who supported Hillary Clinton's candidacy, suggested that Sarandon — a strong supporter of Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Party — wasn't fighting Trump's advance enough by expressing his reluctance to vote for Clinton.
Debra Messing even took the opportunity to tease Susan Sarandon in 2019 publicly after asking the actress on Twitter "if she was enjoying the revolution." The question referenced a comment by Sarandon in which she said some people believed Trump's entry into the White House would start a revolution.
Sarandon, for his part, responded to the provocation, but without mentioning Debra's name. The Thelma actress Louise posted a message on her Twitter where she stated that she was "happy that so many ideas labeled as impossible and radical in 2016" now "are popular and supported by the majority." At the end of the tweet, which included an image of Bernie Sanders, she invites Messing to join the cause.
Frank Sinatra vs. Marlon Brando
Frank Sinatra is considered by many to be one of the most important musicians of all time. But Sinatra's career wasn't just restricted to the music industry, as the star also used his talents as an actor to star in several Hollywood films. One of them even ended up generating a conflict with Marlon Brando.
Rumors at the time were that Frank Sinatra had not been happy at all when Brando was chosen to star in the film Syndicate of Thieves (1954) instead of him. Brando took the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film, but Sinatra was not convinced of the star's talent, finding him even overrated.
The conflict escalated further when both were cast in the film Boys and Girls (1955). Although Marlon Brando walked onto the set with nothing against the singer, his opinion soon changed when Sinatra refused to help him with some scenes where his character needed to sing and dance. Not to mention that Frank was even more resentful for not having won the lead role in the film.
It was from this that Marlon Brando began to disrupt the recording of the scenes in which they both played opposite on purpose, pretending that he had forgotten his lines to annoy the co-worker. The disagreement between the two lasted for years, and apparently the white flag was never raised.
