According to Phil Spencer, who heads Microsoft's Xbox division, he "doesn't feel the need" for a major update to the company's consoles. In a recent interview, he said that the company is quite satisfied with the existing hardware, as evidenced by the available feedback from users.
At the Xbox Games Showcase event, the company has already unveiled an updated version of the existing Xbox Series S series - but only with an increased amount of memory. In addition, the manufacturer is taking measures to compensate for the shortage of Series X consoles and has already "significantly increased" deliveries.
Console manufacturers usually release new series about once every three years. In particular, the Xbox Series S and X versions were first introduced in 2020. According to Bloomberg, the pace of developers' investment in hardware has recently slowed down, because, for example, 8K resolution turned out to be not as popular as 4K - many users simply do not see the difference, and the difference in the price of equipment is quite large. At the same time, Spencer emphasizes that the company takes into account the needs of users. For example, Xbox did not see the need to introduce gaming products related to NFTs or blockchain technologies in general.
Although many Xbox users are skeptical about the company's ability to release successful console games on its own, on Sunday Xbox unveiled 13 new products developed by its own studios, 40 minutes of presentation devoted only to the Starfield project of Microsoft's subsidiary Bethesda Softworks.
Recently, Microsoft has been trying to achieve another important goal - the approval of the purchase of the studio Activision Blizzard Inc. by the UK authorities, who blocked the deal due to fears that Microsoft will take a dominant position in the cloud gaming market. So far, Spencer has refused to say whether the company will leave the British gaming market due to the decision of the local regulator. According to him, Microsoft would like to find a solution. Microsoft has shown a willingness not to abuse its dominant position in the gaming market and has already concluded several deals that provide content and services to cloud gaming providers, including strong competitors like NVIDIA. At Sunday's event, Microsoft representatives announced that some games of the PC Game Pass cloud service will be available to NVIDIA GeForce Now users.
As Spencer stated, the cloud gaming market should not be considered separately from the console market - in his opinion, it is, rather, an "addition" to it.
