You can now watch YouTube Shorts on your Smart TV

YouTube is expanding the reach of its TikTok competitor, YouTube Shorts, with today's announcement that it will begin rolling out Shorts on TV to its global users.

The company's updated smart TV app will now allow users to watch popular vertical videos in a streamlined experience that's designed to feel more consistent with what users watch on mobile, YouTube explains.

This was challenging given that YouTube shorts, like TikTok, were largely intended to be viewed on smaller smartphone screens.

The new short-viewing feature will require a 2019 or later smart TV, newer game console or streaming device, YouTube noted.

The videos themselves can be found in the new Shorts section on the YouTube app's home page or on the creator's channel page.

A long road to the correct visualization of Shorts

In a post on its official blog, the company detailed the different design experiments it investigated to arrive at the final concept of Shorts on TV. He found that short videos didn't look very good in the YouTube app's conventional video player, which had too much black space on either side of the vertical video.

He also considered a "jukebox" style format that would line up three Shorts side by side to make the most of the TV screen without leaving extra room on the sides.

But this experience was not only messy, it also deviated from how shorts should look: one by one.

final design

The layout that YouTube landed on is a custom option that tries to better fill in the sides of the video with a color-sampled blurred background and an outline around the video that looks like a smartphone screen.

It then iterated further on this format to add more features to the side of the video, including information about the creator, the sound used in the video, and thumbs up and thumbs down buttons.

This information can be displayed by clicking the right button on your remote.

In this initial release, viewers can subscribe to a creator's channel as well as like or dislike the video after watching it. The company plans to introduce more community features over time, he says.

When viewing clips, you can also use the remote to start or stop the video by clicking directly on the clip or by using the Play and Pause buttons.

The short will continue to play until you advance to the next short using your remote. You can use the up and down buttons on the remote to skip to the next video or go back to a previous clip, YouTube says.

The company noted that it was unusual for consumers to prefer to use the remote control to move through Shorts videos, as watching videos on TV is typically more of a relaxed experience.

But in this case, he found that viewers wanted to manually control which short played or skipped, just like they would on mobile.

While today's YouTube shorts are watched by more than 1.5 billion registered users every month, there hasn't been a way to watch them on the big screen until now, as the YouTube app hasn't allowed users to stream. shorts to your TV and the main TV app did not support viewing shorts.

Shorts will continue to compete with TikTok

Shorts' expansion to TV will help YouTube better challenge TikTok, which also rolled out its own TV app to multiple platforms last year, including Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, Android TV OS, and select LG and Samsung smart TVs in recent years. North America.

TikTok had also offered a TV app for Google TV and Android TV in the UK, France and Germany, and on Samsung TVs in the UK. But unlike the TikTok TV app, the YouTube TV app has the advantage of being pre-installed on many Smart TV platforms.

Its deployment is global. However, users won't necessarily get immediate access to the feature today, as these types of implementations take time. The company says that all users should be able to view Shorts in the "coming weeks".
