Restrictions, apparently, were introduced on the evening of March 2. Previously, not all payments went through with users, and most often, when trying to pay for a purchase with a bank card, the service gave an error explaining that the issuing company “rejected the request”.
At the time of writing, Steam does not allow you to select any of the options shown in the list for payment other than My Steam Wallet, My PayPal Wallet, and PayPal. When you try to choose some other, a message appears about the impossibility of making a payment.
What exactly this is connected with is still unclear, but it is quite possible that the matter is in disconnecting some of the Russian banks from the sanctions list from the SWIFT system.
Earlier on March 2, the administration of another digital store, GOG.com, announced that it had temporarily stopped accepting payments in rubles, asking all users from the Russian Federation to switch the currency to US dollars. Steam Support, in turn, has not made any statements or explained the situation at the moment.
Users of other gaming services are currently experiencing similar difficulties. For example, the PS Store does not allow you to pay for a purchase with a card - the store only accepts payment cards or payments using PayPal.
