Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple may release a new 30W power adapter with a unique design as early as this year.
Apple's new 30W charging adapter will use gallium nitride (GaN) technology, Kuo said. This technology will reduce the size of the case, while increasing efficiency compared to silicon-based chargers. In addition, GaN adapter devices are noticeably lighter than their silicon counterparts.

If Kuo's assumptions are correct, the new charger could be a smaller, more efficient, and lighter version of the 30W USB-C power adapter that came with the MacBook Air. The charger could also be Apple's answer to devices from other companies like Anker. Third-party accessory manufacturers have long produced pocketable , inexpensive, and efficient GaN chargers for Apple devices. Launching its own GaN charger could help it hold its own in the accessories market.
As a reminder, Apple's first GaN charger was the 140W USB-C adapter that came with the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
However, Kuo's tweet did not mention when the 30W GaN charger might go on sale. He only mentions that they will probably come out in 2022.
