WATCH: Oil tanker off Nigerian coast burns out, no fatalities reported yet

The oil tanker Trinity Spirit has exploded in southwestern Nigeria, near the Niger Delta. This has confirmed SEPCOL, the Nigerian oil exploration and production company. There is still a lot of uncertainty about the circumstances, there are no reports of fatalities yet. The ship is said to have sunk in the meantime.

The explosion on the tanker took place in the Ukpokiti oil field, in the Nigerian state of Delta. “An oil production vessel owned by the Nigerian Shebah Exploration & Production Company (SEPCOL) with ten crew members on board has exploded, an executive at SEPCOL said.

"No fatalities have been reported at this time, but we can confirm that there were 10 crew members on board prior to the incident and we are prioritizing investigations into their safety and security," he said. The condition of the ten crew members is not yet known.

The Trinity Spirit is a floating production, storage and unloading vessel moored at the city of Warri, near the Niger Delta. It is a so-called FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) vessel that is used on offshore oil fields to extract, treat or store oil or gas. It serves as a buffer until the oil or gas can be transferred to tankers. It has a capacity of 22,000 barrels of oil per day.

Images are circulating on social media showing a huge cloud of black smoke over the ship.
