Monica Vitti, icon of Italian cinema, dies at 90

 Away from the spotlight for more than a decade, the actress who suffered from Alzheimer's starred in classic films by director Michelangelo Antonioni and won awards such as the Golden Lion and the Silver Bear.



The Italian actress Monica Vitti , known mainly for her acting in the films of director Michelangelo Antonioni, has died at the age of 90 . The information was released this Wednesday (2) by the former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, at the request of the actress' husband, filmmaker Roberto Russo.

“Roberto Russo, your partner for all these years, asked me to inform you that Monica Vitti is no longer with us. I do so with pain, affection and regret,” Veltroni wrote on Twitter.

The Italian Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, also spoke about the death of the actress. “Goodbye Monica Vitti, goodbye to the queen of Italian cinema. Today is a truly sad day, a great artist and a great Italian dies,” she declared.

Monica Vitti was born in 1931 in Rome and became interested in acting during World War II, when she created stories with puppets to entertain her family. “While the bombs were falling, when we needed to take refuge in shelters, my younger brother and I improvised small plays to entertain those around,” the actress recounted many years later.

As a teenager, the attraction to theater continued to develop. In the documentary “As Mil e Uma Monicas” (2006), Vitti reports that, upon returning from school, he would pass in front of the National Dramatic Art Academy and observe the students interacting and dramatizing, which heightened his interest.



In 1953, it was precisely there that Monica Vitti completed her training. In the years that followed, the actress pursued a career in theater. Five years later, she won her first major role in cinema, in the film “Le Dritte”, by Mario Amendola.

In 1960, he began his artistic partnership with Michelangelo Antonioni, with whom he also had a romantic relationship. In addition to her memorable performance in the classic trilogy “The Adventure” (1960), “The Night” (1961) and “The Eclipse” (1962), which earned her international fame, Monica Vitti acted in other Antonioni productions and worked with filmmakers. Italians such as Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola, Alberto Sordi and Eduardo de Filippo, in addition to having participated in the surrealist film “The Phantom of Liberty” (1974), by the Spaniard Luís Buñuel.



Throughout her career in cinema, the actress has been recognized with awards such as the David di Donatello – the most important in Italy, which Vitti has won five times -, the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Monica Vitti had been away from the cameras and public life for several years due to Alzheimer's, a disease that had affected the actress since the early 2000s.
