Natalia Maliszewska has been struggling with coronavirus infection for several days, which has ruined her chances of starting on the crown distance in the short track. The Polish woman has already received a negative test result on Wednesday, but the subsequent tests are not optimistic.
Natalia Maliszewska, shortly after arriving in China, tested positive for coronavirus and was sent for isolation. The Polish speed skater specializing in short track, started the fight against time, because already on Saturday, February 5, qualifications at a distance of 500 meters are scheduled. This is the crowning distance of the runner-up in the world, who was a candidate for the medal in Beijing.
Beijing 2022. Maliszewska fights contamination
The information from February 2 put a lot of hope in the hearts of Polish fans. It was then that Maliszewska received a negative test for the presence of coronavrius. To break out of isolation, she needed one more such result.
Unfortunately, Thursday's study again showed a coronavirus infection , and PKOL applied to the Medical Expert Panel with a request to release the Polish woman from isolation and allow her to start. The problem is that the next test also gave a positive result, which eliminates the competitor's chances to start in the Saturday qualifying round.
The PKOL announced that Maliszewska will not start on Saturday in a statement published shortly before 10 Polish time. "The Polish Olympic Committee informs that Natalia Maliszewska obtained a positive test for the presence of coronavirus in the body, which excludes her from Saturday's start in qualifying for 500 m. Two negative test results are needed within two days to be able to compete in the competition" - it was reported.
The Poles have no choice but to wait for the next starts in Beijing. On February 9, there will be a 1000-meter relay competition, and a week later we will start at 1500 meters.
Maliszewska and her crowning distance
Let us recall that Natalia Maliszewska is not only the vice-champion of the world at a distance of 500 meters, but also the European champion from 2019. Last year, the Polish woman also won silver at the European Championships organized in Gdańsk, and a year earlier a bronze in Debrecen. The 27-year-old also knows the taste of triumph in the general classification of the Short Track World Cup (2018/2019 season).
