In the wake of criticism from users unhappy that Microsoft has made it harder to change the default browser in Windows 11 to promote its Edge browser, the software giant has decided to scrap the changes. In Windows 11 build 22509, which has become available to members of the Microsoft Insider Program, you can select the default browser with the click of a button.
One of the first to draw attention to this feature was software developer Rafael Rivera, who announced his discovery on Twitter. Windows 11 users will now find it much easier to use third-party apps like Chrome or Firefox as their default browser, similar to how they do on Windows 10.
At this point, the change is available to Insiders. In stable versions of Windows 11, the process of changing the default browser is expected to become easier next year when Microsoft releases one of the planned updates to its operating system.
“In Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22509, which was released Wednesday on the Dev Channel, we optimized the ability to set the default browser to those apps that are designed to work with HTTP, HTTPS, HTM, and HTML. Through the Windows Insider program, you will continue to see us deliver new capabilities based on customer feedback and testing , ”said Aarom Woodman, VP of Marketing for Windows.
