Volvo Cars announced on Friday that it had begun an investigation into a breach of its security systems, which allowed attackers to gain access to the company's research and development data.
“At the moment, investigations confirm that a limited portion of the company's research and development property was stolen during the invasion, ” the company said in a statement. “ Volvo Cars conducts its own investigation and works with an outside expert to clarify the circumstances of the theft of property.”
The company also said that “the relevant authorities” have been informed and that measures are being taken to prevent further attempts to steal data. “Upon detection of unauthorized access, the company immediately took security measures, including measures to prevent further access to its property, and notified the appropriate authorities, ” says a press release from Volvo Cars.
Volvo Cars noted that it does not see any threat to its customers yet. “Based on the information currently available, the company does not see that this has impacted the safety or security of its customers' vehicles or their personal data,” the company said in a statement.
The company has not yet disclosed any details about the nature of the incident, what data was taken, or even from which office or system it was stolen. Volvo is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo manufacturing plants are located around the world, including Belgium, China and the USA. The company also has three research and development centers in Gothenburg, Camarillo (USA) and Shanghai (China). One of them may have become the target of this hacker attack.
