Android 12 introduces support for device control using facial expressions

It became known that developers from Google have added a feature to control a smartphone using facial expressions in Android. New controls appeared in the Android Accessibility Suite, which was released along with the fourth beta version of the Android 12 software platform a few days ago. The updated app is not yet available through the Play Store, but you can install it by downloading the corresponding APK file.

According to the available data, different facial expressions of the user detected through the device's camera can activate different functions. At this stage, the definition of six facial expressions has been implemented. The user will be able to perform various functions by opening his mouth, smiling, raising his eyebrows, and also moving his gaze to the left, right or up. Each of these facial expressions can be used to activate a function, such as going to the home screen or launching a specific application. The setting of the response sensitivity is supported, so that accidental activations of actions can be avoided.

The developers note that this tool can consume alot of power and should be used when the device is connected to a power source. It is not hard to guess that controlling a smartphone using facial expressions is aimed at people with disabilities. Unlike voice commands, facial expression control is silent, making it more preferable when using the device in public or quiet environments.

The new Android Accessibility Suite is expected to become publicly available with the launch of the stable version of Android 12 this fall. It is also expected that the ability to control a smartphone using facial expressions will be available in devices based on Android 11.
