US company accuses Huawei of illegal collection of data from Pakistani residents

American software company Business Efficiency Solutions (BES) has filed a lawsuit against Huawei in the California District Court. It says that during the implementation of a joint project for Pakistani law enforcement agencies, the Chinese company used BES technology to create a backdoor in order to have access to confidential information of citizens.

According to reports, we are talking about one of the projects of law enforcement, which was implemented in Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan. Following the BES statement, Pakistani authorities launched their own investigation into the incident. It is noted that so far there has not been any evidence that Huawei is stealing confidential data of Pakistani citizens. Huawei representatives have denied involvement in the data theft, noting that the company does not have access to confidential information. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry has refrained from commenting on the matter. The partnership between BES and Huawei began in 2016, when a Chinese company obtained the rights to implement a safe city project in Lahore. According to reports, BES has been developing software for collecting data from CCTV cameras and other systems as part of the Safe City project. We are talking about the so-called data exchange system (DES), which stores passport data of citizens, information on registration of foreigners, tax data, etc. Huawei confirmed that the company was working with a test version of the system, but noted that it had nothing to do. with the data exchange system operating in Lahore.
