Apple faced violent protest in China when its Siri voice-assist system mistakenly nullified Chinese athletes' victories at the Tokyo Olympics. Instead of the expected message from Siri about 10 victories at the 2021 Olympics, users in China were amazed to learn that China did not even make it to the list of winners without winning a single gold medal.
The incident happened this week. According to numerous Chinese users via social media, the Siri platform was unable to read the number of Olympic gold medals won by Chinese athletes to date, citing only the United States, which had the same set of 10 gold medals as China. Also named was Japan, which won 11 gold medals, and Russia, with seven gold medals. Siri did not want to name the number of victories in China.
Upon learning of the blatant discrimination, Chinese social media users began uploading videos to Weibo showing the official Olympic gold stats. They hoped the AI Siri would see the correct numbers and change their answer. But Siri's artificial intelligence refused to comply and stubbornly did not mention China among the winners.
Apple later issued an official clarification. The American company said that the problem arose due to technical settings that allowed Siri to voice the name of only one country with a certain set of medals. If two countries had the same number of gold medals, then Siri skipped the second team, forgetting about its existence.
The problem was later fixed and Siri was able to voice the correct score for China.
At the same time, there was a residue from what happened in the country. Many have speculated that Apple may have deliberately neglected China due to ongoing technology and trade tensions.
