Facebook suspends global sales of Oculus Quest 2 due to incidents of skin irritation

Facebook announced that it is suspending global sales of Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets due to reported incidents of skin irritation on users' faces.

The first reports of the problem appeared in December last year. Facebook reported at the time that approximately 0.01% of helmet wearers had a problem. Facebook examined the claims and confirmed the reality of the problem. The company then conducted an internal investigation and shared its findings in April this year.

It was announced that Facebook has not identified any contamination or foreign or unknown substances in production. Only the presence of a number of trace elements typical for the production used was revealed. Their presence could potentially lead to skin irritation, but the company reported that the concentration of these substances in production was significantly below industry standard for safety. Facebook has made changes to the production process to further reduce their concentration.

As a result of the investigation, it was decided to add an additional silicone coating over the original foam faceplate. It should eliminate the reappearance of irritations. For all affected owners of Oculus Quest 2, Facebook suggested contacting support for a free face pad replacement. Facebook is currently working on a solution to this problem.

The foam cover reportedly caused skin irritation in only a small number of users. Facebook received 5,716 annoyance hits; 45 cases required medical attention. A total of 4.2 million gadgets were shipped to the United States and Canada.

As a result, Facebook was forced to announce a voluntary withdrawal of VR headsets from sale for a month to replace the pad with an updated silicone coating. Oculus Quest 2 sales are due to resume on August 24th. This will be announced separately.

Along with the resumption of sales, Facebook is going to introduce a new model Oculus Quest 2 with a storage capacity of 128 GB. It will replace the base model, which has 64 GB of memory. The price of the VR headset will remain the same ($ 300).
