Qualcomm's next flagship chip will be the Snapdragon 898 with a Cortex-X2 core

Qualcomm's next flagship chipset, introduced later this year, will likely be called the Snapdragon 898 and will use the Cortex-X2 core with a clock speed of 3.09 GHz.

A well-informed and reliable source of the Chinese social network Weibo with the username Ice Universe has announced that Qualcomm's next flagship chipset with model number SM8450 is under construction. He claims to have seen the chip clock speed, so Snapdragon 898 may have been prototyped on a product so that Qualcomm could realize how much it could increase its frequency while maintaining device temperature.

Given that we expect Samsung to produce the Snapdragon 898 with its 4nm technology, we can predict increased power and energy efficiency. Qualcomm may continue to use the custom Cortex-X2-based Kryo 780 custom core to achieve speeds in excess of 3 GHz. An earlier report said that the Snapdragon 898 could have the following kernel configuration:

  • A Kryo 780 core based on Cortex-X2
  • Three Cores Kryo 780 based on Cortex-A71
  • Cortex-A510 based dual-core Kryo 780 (possibly high frequency)
  • Cortex-A510 dual-core Kryo 780 (possibly low frequency)

Samsung's 4nm manufacturing process could help boost the power of the Snapdragon 898, but Qualcomm will likely move to the TSMC 4Nm production process for the Plus version of the same chip. TSMC will not be able to produce the Snapdragon 898 for Qualcomm because its product lines are filled with Apple orders, but the company will be able to work with the Plus version in the second half of next year .

The San Diego-based chipmaker is likely to unveil its next flagship chipset in December, and the first products with the chip will be available soon.
