The world's first wooden satellite will be launched into Earth orbit this year

The first space satellite with a wooden body is scheduled to be launched into orbit this year. The satellite, which is made mainly of birch wood, will have several sensors from the European Space Agency to test the conditions for the use of wood in space.

Vvdst (Woodsat) a Tasvarh (CubeSat) with sides 10 cm will be the outer cover layer of plywood is made . In fact, the only non-wooden parts on the outside of the satellite are the aluminum rails in the corner of the fuselage that help place the satellite in space. Of course, a metal monopod is also provided for this device to take a selfie of the body.

Woodst is the product of the creative mind of Finnish scientist-journalist Jari Makinen, who runs a company called Arctic Astronauts, which sells a variety of trimmings for educational and entertainment purposes. He says:

"Given that I was active in the field of space education, the question came to me that why do not we have a wooden device in space? So the idea came to me to send a wooden satellite into the stratosphere with a meteorological balloon. This was done in 2017 with the wooden version of KitSat. "The success of that experiment led us to decide to send our satellite into orbit."

McKinnon has since been working on launching the satellite into space, and has reached an agreement with Rocket Lab to send Woodst to space. On the other hand, the European Space Agency provides Makinen with sensors and cameras to monitor the status and performance of the satellite.

One of the sensors, which is installed on the wood, measures the amount of pressure, and the other measures the amount of air pollution. To send its satellite, the team removes moisture from the wood and places a very thin layer of aluminum oxide on it to withstand the effects of atomic oxygen. If all goes according to plan, Woodst will be on track by the end of the year.
