Apple has been secretly testing a program that would allow the company to provide some medical services to users through doctors in its own clinics. The project, codenamed "Casper", began in 2016, a year after the release of the first generation Apple Watch.
According to the Wall Street Journal , the Casper project was created with the help of Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, and he believes it will allow doctors and patients to stay in touch with each other. This project has apparently been stopped for now, but has not been completely canceled.
Experts say that Apple has come to the conclusion that the best solution for every citizen is to have access to personal health care. The initial idea came when Apple wanted to see how it could use health information from the Apple Watch to help users. Based on this, they decided to create a healthcare service that shares information about Apple devices with Apple's in-person and virtual physicians.
The company reportedly rented a medical clinic near Apple Park and hired Dr. Sombol Desai of Stanford University to manage the project. The Cupertinos initially tested the program for their employees. Part of the project was an application called HealthHabit, which enabled text-to-employee communication between staff and physicians and set health goals for users.
The project continued to face criticism from employees and middle-level managers of the company, who complained about Dr. Desai's work. Some have claimed that the program provided inaccurate information about the performance of clinical trials. Finally, Dr. Desai left the project in 2019.
The Wall Street Journal says the project has now been suspended so that Apple can first build a healthier infrastructure for the Apple Watch and iPhone capabilities. For example, one rumor points to the addition of a blood sugar and temperature sensor that may be added to future generations of the Apple Watch .
