Microsoft has announced the closure of four Bethesda-related studios. Specifically, these are Arkane Austin (creators of Redfall), Tango Gameworks (creators of The Evil Within and, more recently, Hi-Fi Rush) and Alpha Dog Studios (who participated in the mobile version of Doom, Mighty Doom). Roundhouse Games, which was working on an unspecified project, will also be shutting down and will become part of ZeniMax Online Studios to collaborate on the production of The Elder Scrolls Online.
The news was made public after Bloomberg and IGN reported on an internal email that Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, had sent to employees. According to Booty, this is a movement that seeks to "reprioritize titles and resources."
The email, however, barely gives any explanation as to why these teams have been chosen. In particular, the case of Tango Gameworks, the creators of the acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush, is striking. Last May 2023, one of the leaders of Xbox's marketing department pointed out that the action-rhythm game had been "a success by all measures" and that it had "exceeded all expectations" at launch.
As far as Redfall is concerned, and as has already been suspected, the internal email confirms that the game ceases all development. Regarding the content promised with the game's launch DLC - including two heroes that had not yet been released and had no prospects of doing so - Booty claims that "compensation offers" will be given to users who purchased this content.
