Tesla spying on drivers? Elon Musk plunged into another major scandal

Reuters has published a high-profile investigation alleging that Tesla cars send photos and videos of their owners to a central database. This is not happening in an impersonal form, as Elon Musk has repeatedly stated. The materials allow you to identify the owner of the electric car and are in the public domain for Tesla employees, who actively exchange them with each other.

Former Tesla employees interviewed by Reuters say the videos filmed on car cameras have been circulating in private chats for years. They show a wide variety of content, for example, one of the videos shows a naked man walking near the car, and most of the “leaks” contain sensitive scenes from an accident. Videos are often the source of new memes that employees create and send to each other in private conversations.

Tesla claims that the vehicle records are anonymous and cannot be linked to the owner. However, ex-employees say it's easy to pinpoint the exact location where the footage was recorded, and it can already be used to find the home address of a particular Tesla driver.

One of the people who previously worked for Elon Musk claims that the recordings come even from the switched off cars parked in the garage. As of this writing, Tesla has not commented on the Reuters investigation. However, it is likely that the situation - due to the manufacturer's previous privacy statements - will have a negative impact on the brand's reputation.
