International charities suspend work in Afghanistan

Three international charitable organizations have announced the suspension of their activities in Afghanistan. They made such a decision after the Taliban movement (the organization is banned in the Russian Federation ) banned local women from working in NGOs. This was announced today, December 27, by Asia Plus news agency.

Among them are Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council CARE and the International Relief Committee.

“Without our female staff, we cannot effectively help desperately needy children, women and men in Afghanistan,” the international organizations said in a joint statement.

It also notes that in addition to the direct impact on aid delivery, the ban will affect thousands of jobs in the midst of the country's economic crisis.

"Until we get clarity on this announcement, we are suspending our programs, demanding that men and women be able to continue our rescue efforts in Afghanistan equally," — further stated in the statement.

The day before, the Taliban banned local and foreign non-governmental organizations from allowing women to work.

According to a letter from the Ministry of Economy of the Taliban government, female employees of non-governmental organizations are prohibited from working until further notice, because some of them did not adhere to the Islamic dress code as understood by the Taliban.

Agency spokesman Abdulrahman Habib said the letter concerns organizations that are part of the Afghanistan Humanitarian Aid Coordination Agency (ACBAR). These are more than 180 local and international non-governmental organizations.

The UN, which is not a member of ACBAR, frequently contracts with NGOs in Afghanistan to carry out humanitarian work. Employees of the organization note that NGO employees play a key role in ensuring access to assistance for women.

After coming to power in August 2021, the Taliban began to impose restrictions on women. They abolished the 20-year-old Ministry of Women's Affairs, restricted girls' access to schooling, banned women from playing sports, and forced female TV presenters to wear the hijab.

On December 20, the Taliban government ordered the suspension of access to universities for female students.
