All presidents of Afghanistan throughout history : Afghanistan is a unitary Islamic presidential republic in which the president is the head of the state and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Until 2021, this position was occupied by 12 people, the first of whom is Muhammad Daoud Khan, and the last of them is Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

As of writing this article (15/08/2021), Afghanistan did not have any president, its former president resigned and left the country on August 15, 2021 leaving the post without a successor.

This resignation came as a result of the Taliban's success in controlling all of Afghanistan once the US forces withdrew from Afghan territory, including the capital.

The media reported that Ghani left the presidential palace on the morning of August 15 to the US embassy, and from there, he traveled to Tajikistan, but this information is unconfirmed.

It was not only the president who left the country, but also the vice president who was supposed to succeed him in the post, and so, the post remained vacant.

Who is Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai?

Ashraf Ghani is an Afghani politician and academic who served as President from 20 September 2014 to 15 August 2021.

Ghani's tomb is famous for his leadership role in the period after the collapse of the Taliban government in 2001, as the leader who led Afghanistan's plan for economic recovery. Ghani participated in the first elections in 2009, in which he came in fourth place.

In the 2014 elections, Ghani won 55 percent of the vote against 44 of the votes for his rival Abdullah Abdullah.

Ghani was re-elected in the 2019 elections, which were held in 2020 due to the delay, and was sworn in as president for a second term on March 9, 2020.
