There are more than 40,000 oil fields around the world, but most of the oil currently consumed comes from very few fields that are considered the largest of their kind.
Out of the 20 largest oil fields in the world, 10 are located in the Middle East, specifically in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait.
It is worth noting that the region also includes the largest natural gas field in the world, the North Gas Field, which is shared by Iran and Qatar , which contains more than 50 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.

Below we take a quick look at the largest oil fields in the world.
The largest oil field in the world
Ghawar field in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia is the largest oil field in the world in terms of production and reserve volume.
The field is responsible for producing about 3 million barrels of oil per day, and a maximum of about 3.8 barrels per day, roughly a third of the Kingdom's production.
This field was discovered in 1948, and in 1951, production began for the first time, and until 2005, the field had produced more than 60 billion barrels of oil.
In 2007, the International Energy Agency reported that the field's oil reserves were estimated at 74 billion barrels of oil, roughly a quarter of the kingdom's reserves.
Burgan field
An oil field located in the desert southeast of Kuwait. It is the second largest oil field in the world in terms of reserve volume, and the fourth in terms of production volume after the coastal Bolivar field (Venezuela) and Fedorovskoye field (Russia).
Burgan field reserves range from 65 to 75 billion barrels, in addition to more than 70 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
In 2005, oil production in the field was 1.7 barrels per day, compared to about 2.4 million barrels of oil per day in 1972.
In 2010, the CEO of the Kuwait Oil Company stated that the Burgan field today represents about half of Kuwait's oil production.
