The Indian Ocean is a vast body of water located between Africa to the west, Asia to the north, Oceania to the east, and Antarctica to the south.

The Indian Ocean, or the Eastern Ocean, is the smallest of the three major oceans in the world by area. This ocean covers an area of 70 million square kilometres, approximately 20 percent of the water area on the planet.
The ocean extends from west to east for a distance of about 10,000 km, and 8,000 km from north to south.
The average depth of the Indian Ocean is 3,741 meters below surface level.
The commercial importance of the Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean was historically one of the most important trade routes in the world, and still is to this day.
Today the ocean includes some of the most important commercial ports in the world, especially in East and South Asia such as Jakarta in Indonesia and Calcutta and Bombay in India.
The commercial importance of the ancient Indian Ocean was mainly the transportation of spices, but today it is responsible for 40 percent of the world's oil supplies, and 80 percent of the world's maritime oil trade.

In the Indian Ocean there are seven sovereign countries whose territories are located within the waters of the ocean, the largest of them in terms of area is the island of Madagascar, which is the largest island in Africa.
This island is located off the southeast coast of Africa in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, and its area is 587,000 square kilometers.
