Africa's 10 Largest Cities : Africa's population is growing faster than any other continent, and the majority of its cities are unable to sustain this rapid increase as a result of poor infrastructure that exists to support the lives of a much smaller number than its current or future population. Below is a list of the largest cities in Africa.
The largest city in Africa
Lagos is Africa's most populous city, with 21 million people, with an annual growth rate of 2 to 3 percent, the seventh fastest in the world.
The city is located in the state of Lagos on the Atlantic coast, and unlike other cities that depend on oil revenues, it has a highly diversified economy that includes transportation, construction, services, wholesale and retail trade, and industry.
The state generates $90 billion for the country each year, and had it been an independent state, it would have been the seventh largest economy in Africa.
Cairo
As of 2020, Cairo's population is 20.4 million, with other figures pointing to 22 million making it the continent's second largest city, and the first in the Arab world.
Cairo's population is growing at an annual rate of 2.6 percent.
The city is the current capital of Egypt, and as with other cities on the continent, Cairo does not have the infrastructure that would allow it to accommodate such a large population.
The Republic has recently established a new capital that will become more modern than the current capital. The name of this city is not yet known, and it is often referred to as the “administrative capital”.
Kinshasa
Kinshasa is the capital and largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the third largest city on the continent, and the second in the world in terms of the number of French-speaking population.
The republic enjoys very abundant natural resources, but most of its residents live below the poverty line, and the situation in the capital is not much different from other cities.
With a population of 13.3 million, Kinshasa is twice as large as Lunda which ranks fourth with 6.5 million, followed by Nairobi in Kenya with almost the same population.
