Google to Ukraine: these are the aids that the company has provided

The technology giant published a statement informing its position regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The invasion ordered by President Vladimir Putin on Ukrainian territory has sparked a series of decisions by different organizations, institutions and States against Russia.

Among those organizations are also the technology companies that are not unaware of the fact that keeps the world in dismay.

This Tuesday, March 1, the president of Global Affairs of Google, Kent Walker, published a statement indicating the aid that the company is providing to the Ukrainian region that is suffering from military attacks by Russia.

For a few days, the company had already reported that it suspended certain Google Maps functions that facilitated some strategic military work by Russian troops in Ukraine.

Helping Ukraine

The statement titled “Helping Ukraine” describes each issue where Google is involved, highlighting the following:

USD $15 million donation

“ Google.org and Google employees are contributing $15 million in donations and in-kind support to help relief efforts in Ukraine, including $5 million so far from our employee matching campaign and $5 million in grants direct. We are also contributing $5 million in ad credits to help trusted intergovernmental and humanitarian organizations connect people with important sources of resettlement aid and information.

SOS alert in Search

Google developed a type of search that allows citizens to locate shelter and evacuation centers more quickly.

Google highlights that it is "working with expert organizations to obtain useful humanitarian information as the situation develops."

Block suspicious accounts in Gmail

Suspected spam emails are going through an extensive security protection process. “Our Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has seen threat actors refocus their efforts on Ukrainian targets. For example, we have seen the attackers behind the GhostWriter threat group target the Ukrainian government and military officials. We block these attempts and have not seen any compromise of Google accounts as a result of this campaign," Google said in its statement.

Restriction to RT and Sputnik and closure of multiple accounts on YouTube

Like other digital platforms, Google has suspended monetization of the YouTube channels of Russian government-affiliated media outlets RT and Sputnik.

“We have also significantly limited recommendations globally for a number of Russian state-funded media outlets on our platforms. And in the past few days, YouTube has removed hundreds of channels and thousands of videos for violating its Community Guidelines, including multiple channels that engage in coordinated deceptive practices."

Assessment of the situation to continue operating in Russia

The company reported that it is constantly evaluating the situation in Ukraine, with the aim of taking further measures if necessary.
