Switzerland joins EU sanctions against Russia despite its neutrality

Switzerland decided to apply the same sanctions against Russia as the European Union, despite its neutrality. This was announced by the Federal Council (Bundesrat) of Switzerland, writes Reuters.

“In connection with the ongoing military intervention of Russia in Ukraine, on February 28, the Federal Council decided to adopt the sanctions packages imposed by the European Union on February 23 and 25,” the government said in a statement.

Switzerland has also imposed immediate financial sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The country is closing its aviation space to Russian aircraft.

"Switzerland reaffirms its solidarity with Ukraine and its people; it will provide assistance to people who fled to Poland," the Bundesrat said.

At the same time, Switzerland again offered Ukraine and Russia to mediate in a peace settlement.

On February 23, the EU imposed sanctions against Russia for recognizing the independence of the Donbas territories it occupied. This decision concerned mainly State Duma deputies who legalized "recognition" and individual Russian banks, businessmen and oligarchs who financially or materially supported Russian operations in the Donbas or benefited from them.

These sanctions did not stop Russia, and the next day it launched a full-scale war against Ukraine .

In response, the European Union introduced another package of sanctions that included freezing the assets of the Russian president and foreign minister, as well as affecting the financial, energy, transport, and technology sectors of Russia.
