The Starlink global satellite system is a project of SpaceX company Elon Musk . Its development began in 2015, test prototypes were launched in February 2018, and the first group of 60 prototype satellites was launched in May 2019. The total investment in the Starlink satellite Internet project can reach $20-30 billion. In general , it is planned to launch 42,000 satellites.
Starlink satellites are a flat panel weighing about 295 kg, equipped with electrostatic motors powered by krypton. They can rise into orbit, maneuver in space, and deorbit. More than 140 Starlink satellites have now deorbited.
Each satellite has one solar array, four phased array antennas and star orientation sensors. Starlink uses the US Department of Defense's Space Debris Tracking System to maneuver to avoid collision with the space debris itself and other satellites and stations.
Unlike other satellite systems - Iridium, Orbcomm, Globalstar - Starlink's Internet use requires a special device from the company itself, and not standardized satellite phones and antennas. This is a terminal, mounting stand and router. SpaceX sells the kit for $499 and the monthly subscription is $99. The terminal must be installed in a location where the Starlink satellites are directly visible.
At the beginning of 2022, there are already 19 countries in Europe with access to Starlink.
