Experts say Apple T2 security chip successfully hacked

Experts from the IT company Passware discovered a vulnerability in Apple's proprietary T2 chip and announced the creation of a software tool to hack it. It will allow you to access the contents of the disk of all 2018-2020 MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro and Mac mini models in about 10 hours.

Passware has been developing password bypass solutions for nearly 25 years for public and private organizations that have a legitimate reason to do so. It previously released a tool to crack passwords on older Macs protected by FileVault data encryption. It works on the principle of brute-force passwords with calculations on the GPU.

The new software that exploits the T2 chip vulnerability operates on a different principle. Since the Mac password is not stored on the SSD and the chip limits the number of attempts to enter, it is necessary to guess the decryption key, which takes a very long time. Therefore, Passware provides two dictionaries to choose from. One includes 550,000 of the most commonly used passwords collected from various data breaches, and the second consists of 10 billion combinations.

To apply the new Passware tool, you need physical access to your Mac device. The company also assured that it would not allow mass distribution of its development, but still recommended that users use long passwords that include special characters ( !@ $%^&*()-+=[]{}).
