Tesla battery storage in Australia, which caught fire in summer, reopens

Australia's giant storage facility, which suffered a major fire earlier this year during system testing, is back on track. The Neoen SA Victorian Big Battery uses Tesla batteries.

The Geelong facility in southeastern Australia is one of the world's largest energy storage facilities. It has a capacity of 450 MWh and is capable of providing consumers with a capacity of 300 MW. The system is designed to improve the stability of the energy supply in Rugion during the summer.

It is worth noting that there is a surge in energy storage construction worldwide, especially in renewable energy production centers such as California in the US, Australia and China. Since Tesla and Neoen built the first 100 MW energy storage facility in South Australia in 2017, projects like this have scaled up to accommodate more and more energy storage and transmission.

The Geelong storage facility will help Victoria, Australia's second most populous, meet its target of 50% renewable energy by 2030, Neoen said.

Recall that during testing on July 30 at the Geelong facility, a fire occurred inside the Tesla Megapack installation, which was localized on August 2. An investigation into the incident revealed that the fire was caused by short circuits caused by a coolant leak. According to Neoen, the incident initially went unnoticed because the device was launched with crash protection disabled.
