Paleontologists at the University of Reading in the UK managed to identify the DNA of several South American mummies from the remains of hair lice.
Scraps of the genomes of mummies 2 thousand years old were preserved in the clutches of lice eggs that lived in the hair. As it turned out, human DNA is able to persist within the mass of the eggs of parasites, said assistant professor and one of the authors of the study Alejandra Perotti.
Thanks to this discovery, scientists gained access to samples of fossil genomes of ancient people. In addition, the results will help to learn about the natural conditions in which people lived thousands of years ago, writes the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution.
Archaeologists have previously discovered the ruins of the palace of the Sumerian king Sin-iddinam in Iraq. The found building contains ten rooms and several administrative annexes.
