Samsung is ready to roll out new GDDR6 memory chips at record speed. Designed for next generation GPUs, it delivers significant increases in bandwidth over current solutions.
According to the new information, Samsung already has samples of GDDR6 that support data transfer rates up to 24 Gbps. Compared to chips with a speed of 16 Gbps, the new chips provide 50% more bandwidth. In addition, this will allow the South Korean company to compete with Micron, whose GDDR6X memory is capable of operating at speeds up to 21 Gbps.
According to preliminary estimates, the minimum 64-bit solution of the new chip will provide a bandwidth of 192 GB / s. 128-bit performance will improve this figure to 384 GB / s, 256-bit, as in the expected RDNA 3 graphics chips from AMD, will offer up to 768 GB / s, and the top-end 512-bit card will show a result of 1.5 TB / s.
Samsung is believed to have already provided test samples from AMD and NVIDIA. Mass production of the new chips could begin in 2022.
