Ford dealers demand tens of thousands of dollars overpayment from first buyers of electric F-150 Lightning pickups

The outgoing year 2021 was remembered for the shortage of cars, which turned the profile segment into a seller's market and inflated prices around the world. Could not avoid this fate and electric vehicles - so far less numerous, but demanded vehicles. From buyers of Ford F-150 Lightning dealers are ready to charge an additional $ 30,000 for the right to get electric pickups in the first place.

Examples of this kind of entrepreneurial spirit are reported by Electrek , citing the Ford Motor customer community on Reddit. The company has collected about 200,000 pre-orders for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks, which it intends to start shipping in the coming year. At the same time, it was previously reported that in 2022 the company will be able to produce no more than 15,000 cars of this model, in 2023 it will increase production volumes to 55 thousand, and in 2024 it will end with the release of 80 thousand copies. In fact, many of Ford's customers are simply running the risk of staying in line for pickups until 2025.

Since the delivery of the F-150 Lightning pickups will be carried out through the dealer network, many of them in the United States have already received quotas determining the size of the first batch of electric vehicles. Members of the Ford customer community in the United States on Reddit pages note that many dealers require a $ 10,000 surcharge from the first buyers of the F-150 Lightning, and particularly daring sellers do not hesitate to ask for a $ 30,000 surcharge, which only allows them to get ahead of others standing in line and nothing material like additional options is supported. In particular, such a mark-up is made by one of the Ford dealers in the state of Virginia. The first batch for a specific seller will be limited to 25 cars, and those who want to get pickups from subsequent batches will only need to pay $ 10,000.

The existence of a network of dealers, apparently, relieves the automaker of the need to independently deal with the sale and maintenance of the vehicles sold, but for customers it turns into a significant discrepancy in pricing. Tesla in this sense became one of the pioneers, taking up the sale of its electric vehicles directly. It also raised the prices of its electric vehicles throughout the year, citing shortages of components and higher prices for materials, but did so evenly in terms of distributing the financial burden among customers.
