Virgin Galactic, which prepares commercial passenger flights into space, announced a price increase on its tickets. Since their resumption of sales in August, 100 tickets have been sold. In total, 700 passengers have already paid for space travel - 300 less than the "space startup" expects to sell before the start of flights.
The company announced its sales results in its third quarter financials. While Virgin Galactic still has many tickets to sell on schedule, the company says sales are already ahead of schedule.
Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier said the pricing strategy announced last quarter was "well received." Early next year, the company will begin more active ticket sales to space travel enthusiasts.
Virgin Galactic resumed ticket sales just a month after founder Richard Branson himself became one of the first passengers on the VSS Unity in July - with two pilots and three other passengers. In September, it turned out that technical problems arose during the flight and the US Federal Aviation Administration temporarily banned flights during the investigation of the incident until mid-September.
Even before the incident and the investigation became known to the public, Virgin Galactic decided to resume ticket sales, but if a few years ago they were sold for $ 250,000, now they were selling for $ 450,000.
The next mission, Unity 23, with three Italian Air Force officers, was scheduled to take place in September, but was delayed due to potential defects in components from one of the suppliers.
In addition to VSS Unity, the company has built a VSS Imagine ship and is working on another one - VSS Inspire. In October, the company announced that it will not resume commercial flights until the end of 2022, and VSS Imagine will not participate in flights until early 2023 - passengers will have to wait.
In a third-quarter report, Virgin Galactic said it earned $ 2.6 million in three months, with a net loss of $ 48 million in the same period, down significantly from $ 94 million in the second quarter.
