Valve will release SteamOS 3.0 as a distribution for the PC

Last week, Valve hosted Steamworks: Steam Deck Development, detailing its Steam Deck handheld game console. In particular, representatives of the company paid attention to the operating system SteamOS 3.0, on the basis of which the set-top box will work. The company said that if desired, the new OS can be installed on a regular PC.

Valve will release SteamOS 3.0 as a distribution for the PC

The new operating system SteamOS 3.0 will be available not only on the Steam Deck, but also for installation on a PC. This news may be good news for Steam users who would like to upgrade to Linux but are unable to choose a suitable distribution. At the heart of SteamOS 3.0 is Arch Linux with the KDE Plasma desktop environment. In previous releases, Valve has promoted its SteamOS as a modified version of Debian Linux. However, since the release of version 2.195, it has not received any updates for more than two years.

The new SteamOS 3.0 is planned to be released as a flexible Rolling Release distribution. It will contain all the tools you need to run Steam and games. The company also explained that SteamOS 3.0 will have an immutable root filesystem. It also became known that the Steam Deck will support FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) scaling technology.

The company did not indicate the timing of the availability of the SteamOS 3.0 distribution kit for PC. According to Valve engineers, the company has not yet decided on this issue. Now the main focus is on preparing for the launch of the game console, the release of which was postponed from December to February due to a shortage of components.
