North American companies have deployed a record number of robots in the first nine months of this year, according to online sources. This was facilitated by the desire of the business to increase production capacity against the background of the struggle against the shortage of workers.
According to the industry group Association for Advancing Automation, various factories and other industrial customers have ordered more than 29,000 robots, up 37% year-on-year. In total, companies spent $ 1.48 billion on these goals. This also exceeded the previous record value set in nine months of 2017, before the COVID-19 pandemic began to negatively impact the economy.
The hasty adoption of robotic technology is part of a broader investment growth driven by companies seeking to keep up with demand, which in some cases has led to shortages of key commodities. Many companies have also tried to reclaim workers who were laid off during the pandemic and viewed robots as an alternative to manpower.
“Companies simply cannot find the right people, which is why they are striving for automation ,” said Jeff Burnstein, head of the Association for Advancing Automation.
It is also noted that robots continue to penetrate many areas of human activity. Automotive companies have long been a leader in the use of industrial robotic lines. However, in 2020, cumulative sales to other businesses surpassed auto sales for the first time. As of this year, in the first nine months of 2021, auto companies in North America placed 12,544 orders for robotic equipment, compared with 16,355 in other industries, up 53% from a year earlier.
“It's not that the automotive industry is slowing down, it continues to grow. However, other industries, from metallurgy to food production, are growing even faster , ”says Jeff Burnstein.
