By July of this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was forced to admit that a shortage of components and a delay in starting production of 4680 batteries forced the company to postpone the start of shipments of Semi electric trucks until next year. The head of the PepsiCo company still believes that the first copies of the Tesla Semi will arrive at the beverage manufacturer in the current quarter.
At an early stage in the Tesla Semi announcement in 2017, PepsiCo expressed its determination to purchase one hundred copies for its logistics needs. PepsiCo hopes to use the first fifteen trucks to turn one of its California operations into a zero-carbon pilot site. The company was supposed to receive this batch of cars by the end of this year, but later the head of Tesla said that all deliveries were postponed until 2022.
The company should launch the production of the first Semi trucks on an experimental line in Nevada, because traction batteries of the new type 4680 are produced in small quantities nearby, without which the production of trucks itself would not make sense. In an interview with CNBC , PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta expressed confidence that the company will receive the first Tesla Semi trucks in the current quarter. They will help PepsiCo reduce its logistic fleet's 10% carbon footprint. Even the regular renewal of diesel cars cannot be compared in terms of efficiency with the transition to electric traction, therefore the food industry giant considers this initiative very important.
It is still difficult to judge which of the leaders of the two companies has more complete information. According to Elon Musk, customers will start receiving the first Tesla Semi trucks only next year. The PepsiCo chief is more optimistic about the company's ability to get the first cars this quarter. It is possible that he is simply not entirely knowledgeable about the state of affairs with the supply of Tesla Semi.
