Panasonic is ready to supply 4680 batteries not only to Tesla

As the third largest supplier of lithium batteries, Panasonic Corporation remains Tesla's top partner. Together, they produce traction batteries at a plant in Nevada, Japanese specialists have almost completed preparations for the mass production of 4680 cells, which will be registered in the new Tesla electric vehicles, but not only in them.

Panasonic is ready to supply 4680 batteries not only to Tesla

At least in an interview with the Nikkei Asian Review, the head of the newly created "battery" division of Panasonic, Kazuo Tadanobu, admitted that maintaining Tesla's status as the company's main partner does not exclude cooperation with other automakers in the supply of 4680 batteries. so that Panasonic's own resources are used efficiently.

The 4680 cells were developed in Japan on an experimental line, commissioned by and with the participation of Tesla. This standard size was found to be optimal both from the point of view of the balance of characteristics and cost price. The design goals for the 4680 batteries have largely been met, a Panasonic spokesperson explains. The company will fine-tune all the details on an experimental production line before scaling up their technology outside of Japan.

In addition to electric vehicles, Panasonic batteries should be used more actively in backup power systems for data centers, telecommunications and medical equipment. Panasonic's Mexican facility will expand approximately 20% to meet demand in these destinations. At the same time, the Japanese manufacturer is not going to produce lithium batteries based on iron phosphate, which are often used in stationary energy storage systems.

Looking at the gigantic pace of expansion of competitors' businesses, the head of Panasonic's core business unit emphasizes that the Japanese company will carefully choose its investment targets. Panasonic intends to develop new types of batteries and technologies faster than competitors, while maintaining Japan's leadership in core areas. At the same time, the company's participation in industry consortia is not excluded, especially those related to the extraction and processing of materials required for the production of batteries.
