A survey of supply chains by the US presidential administration revealed significant structural deficiencies in both domestic and international supply routes. Commenting on its results, Google invited the US Department of Commerce to instruct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is part of it, to develop standards for chiplets in order to improve their supply chain.
We will remind, in June, the administration of US President Joe Biden published a review of supply chains "100-day Supply Chain Review Report", which analyzes supply problems and suggests ways to improve the situation. The administration has made recommendations for four key sectors of the economy: semiconductors, high-capacity batteries, essential minerals and materials, and pharmaceuticals and ingredients. The administration will present the results of the review of six more sectors to the public in February 2022.
According to Google's reasoning, tighter chiplet standardization will allow developers to use preforms made in different semiconductor factories, thereby increasing competition and increasing diversity.
However, Google would not like NIST to have the final say. "Standards in this area need to be flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of customer and application needs, " the company said, noting that mandatory standards would be counterproductive and could slow technology transitions. “To meet (market) needs, NIST must work with the private sector to support the development of voluntary standards in this area,” Google said .
