Europol has announced the arrest of seven suspects believed to be affiliates of the REvil hackers and have been involved in more than 7,000 cyberattacks since early 2019. According to reports, the arrests took place in Romania, Poland, South Korea and Kuwait.
The source says that several of the detainees are associated with the ransomware GandCrab, the developers of which, according to law enforcement officers, have joined the REvil group. The REvil hackers and the GandCrab operators have leased ransomware to other gangs, commonly referred to as "affiliates." They organized attacks and shared profits with malware developers REvil and GandCrab.
Europol claims that seven detainees have been involved in numerous cyberattacks since 2019, during which the ransom for decrypting data totaled about $ 230 million.Since February this year, the department has cooperated with companies working in the field of information security, such as Bitdefender, KPN and McAfee to arrest members of affiliated gangs.
The series of arrests was preceded by statements by Western countries led by the United States, which promised to take unprecedented measures to combat hackers engaged in the distribution of ransomware. The decision to target ransomware operators came after a series of high-profile attacks, one of which paralyzed one of America's largest operators, the Colonial Pipeline, in May this year. Bitdefender, which took an active part in the fight against the hackers from REvil, earlier this year released a universal decryptor that can be used by victims of the hacker group to recover data.
