Robotics student Ken Pillonel posted a video last month in which he replaced the iPhone X's Lightning port with USB Type-C. Ultimately, he received a fully functional iPhone with a working USB Type-C connector that can be used for charging and transferring data. Now, Ken has posted a much more detailed video and also posted a link to the GitHub repository where you can find the information you need to repeat the experiment.
The 13-minute video captured the enthusiast's entire project, from reverse-engineering Lightning and designing a concept prototype to modifying the device's case to accommodate USB Type-C. The published video and additional materials on GitHub can be called a full-fledged instruction, using which a sufficiently qualified person can repeat the transfer of the USB Type-C connector to the iPhone or do something original based on the available data.
Note that the enthusiast put the result of his work on eBay, calling it "the world's first iPhone with USB-C". At the time of this writing, the cost of the device was $ 3950, but there are still 8 days until the end of the auction, so we can assume that the price of an unusual gadget will have time to rise even more. At the same time, the smartphone buyer is not recommended to restore it, update it or use it as an everyday smartphone.
It is also known that the enthusiast intends to continue to work on modifying mobile devices. He is interested in the possibility of improving fast charging, water resistance, etc. Probably, in the future we still have to see unusual modifications of Ken.
