Aerospace company Blue Origin of multibillionaire Jeff Bezos has lost a lawsuit against the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Bezos' company has filed a lawsuit over the fact that NASA has entered into an exclusive contract for the creation of a lander to deliver astronauts to the moon with its competitor - SpaceX Elon Musk (Elon Musk).
Judge Richard Hertling, who is overseeing the federal court case, ruled today that Blue Origin's motion to adjudicate in its favor was denied.
Blue Origin hoped to take part in NASA's Artemis lunar program. As part of the program, NASA is working with various companies in the space industry to create rockets and spacecraft that will help bring American astronauts to the lunar surface. The construction of a private lunar lander is an important part of this plan.
Prior to the conclusion of the contract, the agency announced that it would select two companies for the construction of the module. Of all those wishing to conclude a contract, NASA chose three main contenders: Blue Origin, SpaceX and Dynetics. But then, unexpectedly for everyone, it signed a contract only with SpaceX, which asked the least for the development of its Starship spacecraft - $ 2.9 billion .
NASA explained its decision to choose one company instead of two by insufficient funding of the lunar program. The space agency asked the government this year for its program to land a man on the moon $ 3.2 billion, but the US Congress allocated only $ 850 million. Due to a lack of funding, NASA decided to go with the company that offered the most affordable option. In turn, Blue Origin has requested $ 5.9 billion for the development of the Blue Moon spacecraft. And despite the fact that Jeff Bezos then offered a discount of $ 2.0 billion, promising to cover the costs from its own funds, NASA did not change its decision.
