More recently, unofficial sources reported that TSMC is in talks with Sony to jointly build a new production line in Japan. It was supposed to be located in Kumamoto Prefecture, near the Japanese-made image sensors for cameras.
This time, it is officially reported that TSMC and Sony did indeed negotiate and they ended very successfully. TSMC CEO CC Wei confirmed that the company will work with Sony to jointly build a new production line. It is indicated that two more companies are investing in the project, but their names have not been disclosed.
The new production line in Japan will manufacture image sensors for cameras and automotive components using mature 22nm and 28nm manufacturing processes. The construction cost was not disclosed, but rumors pointed to $ 7 billion. The construction of the factory will begin next year, with mass production expected by 2024.
