It became known that the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) race will take place on October 23 in the American city of Indianapolis, in which 10 teams from 21 universities will take part. The $ 1 million event will feature autonomous cars running on open source software at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
All vehicles that will participate in the IAC are reportedly using the Robotic Operating System 2 (ROC 2) software platform and Autoware versatile autonomous vehicle software. Both open source products are developed by specialists from Open Robotics and other companies.
According to reports, the main goal of the IAC is to advance technologies that can accelerate the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and the deployment of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The main sponsor of the event was the Indianapolis-based charity Lilly Endowment Inc. One of the main factors that made the IAC race possible is the open source architecture that university students have used to develop their own autonomous driving concepts for racing cars in a relatively short time.
“What's really exciting about IAC's more high-speed autonomous vehicles is the prospect that a whole generation of engineers will learn and use ROS. Advanced technology does not arise in a vacuum. Students need a common language and a set of tools to work effectively together. Done right, open source technology is driving development, and this year's achievements are likely to be part of future competition and possibly production cars , ”said Open Robotics spokesman Katherine Scott.
As for the upcoming race, Dallara AV-21 cars, retrofitted with the appropriate hardware and software, will participate in it. Competitors will provide their cars with individual sets of sensors and use their own software. How the race of autonomous cars IAC will end, it will become known already on Saturday.
