The most powerful magnetic storm in years will hit the Earth this weekend - disruptions in satellite navigation, power systems and more are expected

Over the past day, 14 relatively strong flares have been recorded on the Sun, one of which is attributed to the maximum power class. The plasma ejection generated by this flash was directed towards the Earth. This was reported by the TASS news agency with reference to data from the Laboratory of X-ray Astronomy of the Sun of the Lebedev Physical Institute.

“The assessment of the impact on the Earth from the events taking place shows in this case the inevitability of almost the maximum impact that an X1.0 class flash can inflict. It is expected that the first contact of the Earth's magnetic field with the plasma, which was part of the solar atmosphere the day before, will take place at about 10 am Moscow time on October 30, ” FIAN reported.

According to available data, solar flares were observed during the day on Thursday, as well as on Friday night. They occurred in approximately the same region of the luminary, which is currently directed towards our planet. The ejection of coronal matter resulting from the flares will cause a powerful geomagnetic storm that will last up to two days. Experts believe that the upcoming magnetic storm will be the largest natural phenomenon of its kind in recent years. It is possible that this event will cause serious malfunctions in the operation of satellite navigation systems, power systems, as well as false alarms of protection systems.

Scientists do not predict new powerful flares in the same region of the Sun in the near future. It is noted that the very fact of the occurrence of a powerful flash came as a surprise to astronomers, since the star is currently located near the minimum of activity. It is noted that over the past four years, only once have instruments recorded an X-class flash on the Sun.
