Tensor specifications announced; Google's first proprietary chip for smartphones

A few months ago, Google announced the official images of the Pixel 6 series phones, equipping them with a dedicated tensor chip, but did not announce its specifications. But now that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have been officially unveiled, the company has announced the details of its first chip for smartphones.

Tensor specifications announced; Google's first proprietary chip for smartphones

This Google chip is produced with 5-nanometer lithography and uses 8 processing cores, which include large, medium and small cores. In this chip, we see the use of two Cortex-X1 cores with a frequency of 2.8 GHz, which is significantly different from other flagship Android chips.

The Snapdragon 888 chip used in many Android 2021 flagships uses an X1 core. We'll have to wait and see how the tensor performs against Qualcomm's chip.

Leaving the two Cortex-X2 cores, we come across another cluster with two Cortex-A76 cores operating at 2.25 GHz. Finally, we have four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. Google did not do anything in the graphics department and equipped the tensor with Mali-G78 graphics processor, which we see in many Android flagships.

Tensor Chip

The new chip allows the Pixel 6 series handsets to translate videos and messages at high speeds using Live Translate, making them smarter at recognizing your voice. This will be very effective when typing using sound. In general, according to Google, the tensor chip shows 5 to 80% higher performance than the pixel.

According to Google, the tensor chip adds a new layer of security to the Pixel 6 series. This feature works with the Titan M2 security chip, which protects the device against malware and other possible attacks. Such an approach is in the interest of users, and it is hoped that more Android phones will be equipped with it in the future.

At present, the tensor seems to provide us with all the features we would expect from a mobile chip: high speed and artificial intelligence capabilities. If Google can continue this trend in the future, the Pixel phones could potentially become a strong competitor to the iPhones.

Using a proprietary chip and operating system developed by Google itself, we will see a powerful and psychological combination. It is even possible that the tensor will be used in other brands of phones.
