In the Google Play Store, viruses are disguised as "Squid game"

The series of the same name, a South Korean production, became a real sensation, which led to the popularity of both the actors and the franchise. Scammers, who released a dangerous application for Android, did not fail to take advantage of all this.

According to Lucas Stefanko, Android malware researcher at ESET, there are at least 200 apps in the Android store that are related in one way or another to the Squid Game series. As it turned out, there are dangerous software among them, the developers of which managed to escape Google's scrutiny.

The Squid Game program acts as a wallpaper changer on smartphones, but is actually Joker-type malware. After installation, the user is subscribed to various premium services without even participating in the registration process. For this, account data are used, and payment is made from a card account. Squid Game views messages, contact lists and other data. It is alarming that this program has been downloaded 5000 thousand times. At the time of this writing, the dangerous software has already been removed.

Lucas Stefanco notes that in 2019 alone, the Joker was detected in 24 applications, downloaded more than 472,000 times, and in 2020, 64 variants of it appeared on the Play Store. As for the rest of the programs associated with the series, they simply show a lot of advertisements, but they are not dangerous for the user.
