EA Sports has already confirmed that the next title in the FIFA series may have a new name. for the order of 2.1 billion.
FIFA may have been the last to include the name of the International Federation of Football
It was EA Sports itself that confirmed the news that the next title in its FIFA football series could have a new name. In a publication celebrating the 9.1 million players, the producer stated that the FIFA name could fall.
The explanation for this fact was given by Cam Webber, general manager of EA Sports, who said that the producer was “reviewing the name rights agreement with FIFA”. Now, it appears that negotiations between the producer and the International Football Federation have reached an impasse.
According to the New York Times, FIFA is asking for close to 2.5 billion of dollars – around 2.1 billion euros – for EA Sports to keep the FIFA name in their game. This is twice the value previously agreed between the two parties.
The value considered too high by EA Sports led the producer to consider changing the name of one of its most profitable titles. For now, EA Sports FC seems to be the name that will be adopted, as the producer has already filed patent applications in the United Kingdom and the European Union in that sense.
On the other hand, according to New York FIFA teams also seek exclusive licensing from EA Sports. In other words, it also wants to have access to videogame rights, in order to obtain a new source of revenue.
And it was these two reasons that led the already usual negotiations between the two brands to take over unexpected contours for all fans.
A name change in a football video game is nothing new. Remember that Konami recently dropped the name Pro Evolution Soccer to adopt the brand new name of eFootball. Will EA EA Sports FC please the title’s millions of players?
