The Facebook group made it known that the long-awaited end-to-end encryption for WhatsApp backups is finally implemented in the messaging app. This applies to users of the Android and iOS application with immediate effect.
Until now this level of cryptographic protection covered all messages exchanged on WhatsApp, such as individual conversations , calls, as well as whatsapp group chats. Now, the same protection includes conversation recordings, security backups made automatically and/or by the user’s hand.
End-to-end encryption also in the backups of WhatsApp
The measure was communicated by Mark Zuckerberg himself through his profile. Facebook, as well as through institutional channels through Facebook Newsroom. There, in effect, we would see the detailed explanation of what was the great missing security function.
It is, therefore, a greater layer of protection that now includes the data stored in the cloud in backups. The novelty is already being distributed without users having to worry about a manual update.
Nevertheless, Facebook made a point of explaining the gradual and phased nature of this new update. Even if the user doesn’t have to do anything but wait, the global distribution may take a few weeks to cover the entire globe.
This is an important security enhancement for the Whatsapp
The news was first advanced by the Newsroom channel of the Facebook group.
-
- Open WhatsApp and access the Settings menu
- Accesses Chats – Backup of chats – Encrypted peer-to-peer backup
Currently the WhatsApp backups or backups are present in Google Drive, or iCloud. Thus, with the new update, they will be protected by a cryptographic key 64 digits (automatic) or by a password (to be defined).
As we can attest to in the publication available in Newsroom, neither WhatsApp nor the service where the backups are hosted (Google Drive or iCloud) will have access to the contents stored there. Thus, such access is only allowed by providing the access key for unlocking.
In summary, users now have full control over WhatsApp backups regardless of their online location.
Theoretically this means that no one will be able to access the contents of these backups. This is unless they have the 64 digit encryption key, or user-defined password.
Enable end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp backups
Click Activate and follow the on-screen instructions.
- It ends when you click Done.
Finally, if you want to disable this function, just follow the steps above with the necessary specifics, going through the same menus.
