Tesla autopilot has another accident in the USA with the participation of an emergency vehicle

The US transportation safety regulator said Wednesday that it had identified 12 accidents involving a Tesla electric vehicle using the Autopilot driver assistance system and an emergency vehicle. Interestingly, only on August 16, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it had begun an official inspection of Tesla Autopilot after 11 accidents.

The twelfth incident took place in Orlando on Saturday. The Florida Highway Patrol said a police car, who pulled up on a busy highway near Orlando to help a disabled driver, was rammed by a Tesla electric vehicle with driver assistance activated. The policeman was outside the car at the time of the accident.

Earlier NHTSA reported 17 injuries and one death due to 11 accidents that occurred due to the Tesla autopilot. It is believed that the problem is that the Tesla system does not recognize emergency vehicles parked on the side of the road, which leads to accidents. Moreover, Tesla itself notes that its systems are not yet capable of providing fully autonomous driving, and the driver must always be on the alert. However, the loud names of driver assistance systems - Autopilot (autopilot) or Full Self-Driving (fully autonomous driving) - can be confusing to drivers.

As part of the investigation, NHTSA sent Tesla an 11-page letter asking questions about the case. The agency wants Tesla to explain its autopilot testing methods, when and where users turned on Full Self-Driving, all consumer complaints about the system, crash reports, and information on lawsuits related to the autonomous driving system. Tesla is due to respond to the request by October 22nd.
